What is an AHA PALS Instructor?

An AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor is a certified professional who teaches AHA PALS Provider Courses. These courses prepare healthcare providers to recognize and manage critically ill infants and children, especially in respiratory failure, shock, and cardiac arrest.

As a PALS Instructor, you’ll teach others how to:

  • Perform high-quality pediatric BLS
  • Recognize and manage respiratory and circulatory emergencies
  • Use pediatric assessment tools and algorithms
  • Lead and support resuscitation teams
  • Apply team dynamics and communication in pediatric emergencies

Who Should Become an AHA PALS Instructor?

Becoming a PALS Instructor is ideal for:

  • Nurses (especially pediatric, ER, ICU, transport)
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Paramedics and EMTs
  • Physicians and advanced practice providers
  • Clinical educators and preceptors
  • Anyone with a passion for teaching and pediatrics

If you’re already AHA PALS Provider certified and have strong teaching or leadership skills, this is your next step!

Requirements to Become a PALS Instructor:

  1. Hold a current AHA PALS Provider certification
(Must be up-to-date and completed with a strong performance.)
  2. Hold a current AHA BLS Provider certification
(You’ll also be expected to teach and evaluate BLS skills within the PALS curriculum.)
  3. Align with an AHA-authorized Training Center (TC)
(Your TC mentors you, helps with paperwork, and issues cards to your students.)
  4. Complete the AHA PALS Instructor Essentials Course (online)
(Covers core instructor responsibilities, adult learning principles, and AHA policies.)
  5. Attend a Hands-On Instructor Course Session
(You’ll be evaluated on teaching ability, knowledge, and skills.)
  6. Be monitored teaching your first class within 6 months
(This final step ensures you’re ready to teach PALS independently and confidently.)
